Teaching East Asia Through Visual Culture: A Hybrid Professional Development Workshop for Arkansas Teachers, Grades 6 - 12

Even as East Asia has become more visible in global politics and our daily lives, language barriers often make it difficult to effectively incorporate Asian texts into the classroom. This PD session will tackle this challenge by providing strategies for engaging Asian history and culture through visual sources—from high art to popular film. Through a series of focused sessions on topics like travel and nature in Japanese Woodblock prints, the “Yellow Peril” in Western postcards, visions of “the people” in Maoist Propaganda posters, and the memory of the Atomic Bomb in Japanese manga, this workshop will provide educators with both the historical context and practical materials necessary to visually engage Asia in the classroom. The session also introduces teachers to accessible digital collections of visual sources and lesson planning guides for use in the classroom.

Are you an educator in Arkansas who wants to learn from experts in Asian history, language, and culture? Do you want to discover engaging, multilayered materials and free, online archives of important sources with English translations? Are you looking to prepare lesson plans for in-person or online instruction, and make Asia approachable to your students? If so, then this Professional Development session is perfect for you! This fun, content- focused online workshop explores prints, propaganda posters, comic books, film, and video games as vital tools for understanding East Asia’s past and present.  On July 27th, come join us in our mission to teach East Asia through visual culture.

    Benefits include:

    • 6 Hours of Continuing Education Credit
